America: A Nation Under Gun

The gun was not born in America. But it became an American as quickly as it could.

Since then, shooting has become an American routine. In recent months, it has become an American epidemic.

Someone, usually a male, gets mad, gets some guns, goes after his family or his friends or his workplace or his perceived enemies or random targets. He mows down as many as he can. Then he takes his own live.

Nobody knows how many people are shot in the United States everyday. It is a scary statistics. When it happened again in New York yesterday, the Newspapers only reported that it was the worst mass shooting since April 16, 2007 when 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech University campus. Some papers who bordered to keep any count said 25 people had been killed in three mass shootings in the last month.

As it stands now, those who wish to make the news need to kill more than ten. Anything less is not a breaking news. No news media will interrupt the coverage of President Obama in Europe because you killed 4 people. No. Not in today’s America. You have to aim higher.

It is crazy. But that is if you have the privilege of having a different perspective. For most Americans, it is a way of life. The vast majority of Americans are in denial. Nobody want to count how many are killed everyday in all the cities and small towns of America. That number can cause a riot.

But this is what we know. According to the CDC, in 1998, about 30,000 people were killed by guns in the United States. In 1998, it fell to about 29,000. In 2002, it went up to about 30,000. The figure for 2005 was 21,000. More Americans people die every two years from gunshots than all the Americans killed in Vietnam. And America lost over 57,000 people in that war.

About 3000 Americans died on September 11, 2001 when Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda group attacked America. For that, we went to a war in two countries where we have spent close to a trillion dollars. But ten times that number dies each year in the hands of other Americans who choose to use their guns to kill other Americans. You think there will be a sense of outrage over that? Not at all.

In fact, if 30,000 Americans die in a plane crash each year, FAA will ground all American planes until they figure out what is wrong with the planes. But from gunshots, well, guns do not kill people, we are told. So, there really is nothing that we can do.

After the last plane crash in upstate New York, Governor David Patterson of New York offered scholarship to children of the victims. Commentators in the state wondered why such a generous offer. They wondered why the same kind of treatment would not be extended to those who died in road accidents.

What about the 30, 000 gunshot victims each year?

Some 100 years ago, in London, then the most civilized and sophisticated city in the world, doctors drilled holes with nails into the heads of some mentally ill patients to let out the evil spirits in their heads.

Some 100 year from now, those who will occupy these United States will look at how we allowed ourselves to be enslaved by guns and wonder if we were not as foolish as doctors in London at the beginning of the 20th century.

Each year comes more and more sophisticated weapons. With the election of Barack Obama as president, purchase of guns doubled. There are now more guns in America than people. The rights to bear arms will soon become the right to wipe out your hometown. The gun lovers, the gun makers and the National Rifle Association bear no responsibility other than to remind us that guns do not kill people.

Indeed!

Why are they hunting for Taliban? America should make its own civil society a civilized one, who can understand the importance of human life. They should inculcate in them the basic human values.

I think that most people forget their humanness and the many variation of mental make up that can’t be controled by morality or simple conversation
Dizzy emotion talks dizzy as i see it- talking like a nut could determine what is right or wrong
We were born to kill and spend more time and money thinking of ways to kill each other than time to save lives ,so lets shake our dizzy heads
Here is how a so called normal brain sees guns. I don’t own a gun to kill people. I own a gun to keep from being killed. I don’t own a gun because I’m paranoid. I own a gun because there are
real threats in the world. I don’t own a gun because I’m evil. I own a gun because I have lived long
enough to see the evil in the world.
I don’t own a gun because I hate the government. I own a gun because I understand the limitations of government.
I don’t own a gun because I’m angry. I own a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared. I don’t own a gun because I want to shoot someone. I own a gun because
I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.
I don’t own a gun to make me feel like a man. I own a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love. I don’t own a gun because I feel inadequate. I own a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate. I don’t own a gun because I love it. I own a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police Protection is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.
I own a gun. And I know how and when to use it.
Rememder we are the same species and that is one messed up piece of soft tissue

Wayne,

I have no problem with people who own guns. I do not own one. I do not think owning one will save me from being shot at work because a coworker was mad. I do not own a gun because I do not think the government is coming to get me and my gun is what will save me from a nuclear armed government that is determined to get me. I do not own a gun because I think in a real armed conflict the person that wins is really the one who pulls the gun first - and it is usually the criminals who do. I do not own a gun because I do not think when I am frustrated, as we all are, sometimes, I need that ready made temptation to take it out on others (Oh, about 63% of suicides in America is done using personal guns). I do not own a gun because I do not think when I am angry, as we all are, sometimes, I need a lethal weapon by my side to express that anger. Having said that, I do not think those who own guns are nuts. I do not think they are inadequate. I just think they should stop telling the rest of us that guns do not kill people.

You let your primitive emotion answer me and didn’t hear the jest of my post
Your answer tells me your into the dizzy 95% of humans and it has nothing to do with guns but to explain to a head with no ears would be a waste of time–I MEAN PEOPLE IN GENERAL
I am just an observer and take no stand on anything good, bad or indifferent ,but get frustrated wallowing in a world of dizzy
The easiest thing to do is to direct emotion in any direction the stronger thinker wants to take them
Maybe the next time we can talk on something we can all agree upon –like why water to a thirsty person seem so life giving

I always thought it is the responsibility of the enlightened 5% to educate the rest of us.

You do not have to wait until you agree with people before you educate them. In fact, there is little need to educate those you agreed with.

Now is your chance, Wayne, to break it down for people like me. And we are many.

I’m waiting.

A wise person that can understand the total makeup of a physical and mentally human, knows you can’t educate a formed mind
What you do is look out the window of life at people conducting themselves as nature dictates and feel sad ,that there is nothing one can to to help or change the weakness of humans
The few that understood will come and go and not make a dent in the lives of the mostly soical and cultural dizzy and i don’t say that with disrespect but sadness
I am just a rhetorical speaker passing the short time of limited consciousness forced to speak because of dna but will be soon gone from this crazy world- where i wonder mentally alone
Rudolf keep up the good posts and remember love is but love is not

Thanks for your vote of confidence, but i never was fooled by nature ever since i was three years old and realy never was able to live a primitive life ,or tryed to fit in where life was so crazy
Getting back to guns CNN did a special on guns and their effect and consequences on the general public in the USA but because the USA is the most open country in the world and everything is magnafied by the press it only seems there are more weapon related instances in the USA
Like i sad it is not guns that kill, or the country they are in ,it is the mind of a disturbed human that does it and the mentally ill is equal in percentage in all countries
Rudolf took a sensational story at the right time and everyone felt venerable and fell into the trap of blame

I happened to have lived in so many other countries with different gun cultures and equal amount of crazy folks (if we can agree on that), their homocide rates are nothing compared to what we have here in these United States. Why is that, Wayne?

Guns don’t kill people, the person whose finger is on the trigger does. Kitchen knives don’t kill people, the people whose hand is wrapped around the knife kills people.

If someone wants to take away a life and they don’t have a gun they can easily find weapons to execute thier horrible desires.

Poor comparison with airplanes and the FAA. When a gun malfunctions the vast majority of the time it does not kill a person. When an airplane malfunctions and the pilot can’t control the plane then the airplane kills. Baseball bats, knives, fists, feet, chains, cars all are used by humans to kill. To be fair if we restrict guns then lets restrict knives, baseball guns and the sort.

But whatever we do let’s not hold the humans who use these tools of death. Just blame it on tools, not the users of the tools.

Troy,

Tell me the last time someone used a kitchen knife to kill ten people? Tell me the last time someone used a bat, a fist, a chain to tell ten people? Tell me.

Guns like planes do not function on their own. If by malfunctioning you mean the plane not landing where it should or the gun not hitting the right target, then it made sense. But the point really is that any ’tool’ that ends up destroying the people it is not meant to destroy will be examined by the authorities.

Its insane how the USA loves their guns and yet do not realise how stupid it is once a society is saturated with them....

Countries that have tight gun controls are safer. End of story.

You are not right on your speculation on guns and the USA and i could use examples of violence in any country -day and night
The reason your picking the USA is because of the openness of the press and the other countries you were in don;t allow that kind of truth
if you read what i write i am against borders and flags or it is not a bias
Rudolf one last point you don’t star people who take the time to post on your articles very often, which tells me you see more of you than others- a quality you should work on
To be seen you should see first and it takes practice
I don’t care about guns but watch out for the crazies that look normal
I am you and you are me ,we are the same species, and if the you in me and the i in you work together than we can make a better I

Good to know that you are me and I am you- without the gun, I must say.

You’re right about my not reading/staring people as much as I should. Not that I do not care but just a lack of time. I am a full time student, full time worker, full time writer, full time father and full time community organizer. I will do better when the semester ends in May.

Peace.

Your making excuses and you wouldn’t take excuses from your children for poor behavior -so your excuse is not valid
You still didn’t get the jest of what i was trying to say but maybe in May or June when your not so busy you can try again–take care
A human that lived 100 years and stays cultural busy and spent 10 years to get cultural degrees compared to a human that lived a 100 years and only looked at and enjoyed nature dies- no difference except the one not culturally formed enjoyed life more
I will try to post less words next time to save you time

I still struggle to come to terms with the mentality of gun culture. Shootings in the states are common yet Americans generally love the fact that their constitution protects their right to own guns. This latest shooting in Germany did come as a shock but still, not entirely unusual.

What is it about people who argue the old saying ”guns don’t kill people, people kill people”?

We as a species are fearful, irrational, vengeful, violent, unstable and bias in many a different way. Nothing is going to stop that. Even the most ’normal’ law abiding citizen will get divorced, dumped, fired, bullied or have other issues that might even only for a few hours cause him or her to become irrational or violent. Normally the person can calm down and just get on with it but if that person, at the height of their madness reaches for a gun. Too late.

And yet we always hear about ”what made them do it?” ”I don’t understand why he killed all these people!” ”he was so normal”

I know why they do it, they are human and humans are animals plain and simple.

There have been time in my own life when if I had A gun available, I probably would have used it. But I didn’t, because the passage of time allows for a cooler head to prevail.

So instead of trying to ”fix” people who commit these terrible crimes, why don’t we just take away the tools with which the crimes cause such damage?

Serial killers may not kill ten people all at once but many through the ages have killed more than ten people with a kitchen knife, their fists and baseball bats. The homicides rates are high even without mass killers. Does anyone know with certainty out of all the homicides committed what is the break down between all gun verses other types of weapons? I’d be willing to bet that far from the majority are with other weapons. The malfunction anonolgy is that if you use a semi automatic weapon and you pull thre trigger and it fails to fire that is a malfunction. That malfunction potentially saved a life. A plan malfunctions it usually takes lives.

Have you every shot a hand gun , rifle or shotgun? Some guns are designed to be profiecent killing machines while others are designed for hunting and recreation. Not all guns are tools of death although they can be used for such as thing. Kitchen knives are not created as tools of death but they can be used that way along with a crow bar, baseball bat etc.

Anyone foolish enough to think that gun control will mitigate homicide they are wrong. Gun control doesn’t apply to crimnals. Gun control will just make law abiding citizens fighting for the 2nd amendment rights to potentially be the criminals.

You people who want to trample on the constitution go shhot targets with guns and see how fun it is. Try handguns, rifles and shotguns. It’s a very relaxing and exciting pass time. Just learn gun safety before you go shooting or go with someone well versed in guns. Gun accidents are a sad reality.

We can’t outlaw everything with the potential to kill. About a decade ago a drunk driver in the state of Utah plowed into a small group of teenagers killing a few and sending the rest to the hospital. Shall we restrict cars. Cars are not even protected under the constitution. It would be easier from a legal standpoint than to fight the consitution. Don’t outlaw tools. We’ve already outlawed the people who use these tools that kill people but they keep on doing it. Let’s enforce the laws on the books rather than make more uneforceable laws.
