Being that you are next in line to the Almighty, I am neither going to be fresh nor will I try to economize the truth.

I will start by telling you that you are not my Pope. Nothing personal, your holiness. Everyone has just a primary Pope in a lifetime. Mine was your predecessor, Pope John Paul II. The primary Pope is usually the Pope that first captures anyone’s imagination. After that Pope, subsequent ones look like mere substitute Popes.

It does not help that I watched the papal conclave from outside as the Cardinals played the dice that saw you, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, emerge after the smoke as the 265th successor to St Peter on April 19, 2005. I had thought that the Catholic Church would do the right thing and change the world by making a cardinal from Africa or Latin America Pope. I had hoped that the Pope would come from amongst those people who still go to church.

Don’t worry about me, though. For many millions who did not know John Paul II, you will be their Pope. They will look up to you to change their world. They will line up the street, storm the stadium, kiss your hand, and hang on every word you say. Many will be your groupies. It is the nature of the business.

I write you today for one simply reason – Just like John Paul made his mark as an anti-communist crusader, your job is already cut out for you as an anti-Islamic fundamentalist crusader. You have no choice in the matter. I know you recognized it for I heard what you said at Regensbury University in September 2006, “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

I must tell you that I was disappointed that you backed down when the heat came on.

Dear Holy Father, Christ, as you well know, was killed on the cross for preaching the truth. You, too, should be ready for the sacrifice that comes with wearing the pallium and riding in the Popemobile. Each time you blink, fidget, or back down, the terrorists win.

Many have called you the apostle of reason. Tell me, Holy Father, what is the reason behind Catholic doctrine that prohibits the use of contraception like condom while still opposed to abortion? In this age of AIDS and world over population, why are you not revising it? Do you know that on your hands is the blood of many who die daily from AIDS and poverty? Why do you back abstinence only education, denying millions of teens vital sex education knowledge when even your priests could not keep their vow of celibacy? Why are you opposed to gay marriage when most sex abuses involving Catholic priests point to gay lifestyle?

Where is the reason in all that, Holy Father?

Recently, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia visited you at the Vatican. He woke up, hopped into his jet and landed at the Vatican. When are you going to visit him in Mecca? He visited the mosque in Rome, when will there be a church in Mecca or anywhere in Saudi Arabia?

As crazy as he was, when Benito Mussolini was approached by a group of Arab ambassadors informing him of their desire to build a mosque in Rome, the fascist ruler said to them, “There will be a mosque in Rome, only when a Roman Catholic Church is permitted in Mecca.”

Welcome to America, your holiness. We await your message. And it is our sincere hope that you will listen to us too. For as the saying goes, Vox populi, vox dei, the voice of the people is the voice of God. If you don’t, the status quo will remain – you keep saying whatever you like and we keep doing whatever we like.

Or, as you put it in that holiness lamentation of yours:

Today, a particularly insidious obstacle to the task of education is the massive presence in our society and culture of that relativism which, recognizing nothing as definitive, leaves as the ultimate criterion only the self with its desires. And under the semblance of freedom it becomes a prison for each one, for it separates people from one another, locking each person into his or her own ego.

Rudolf:

The Pope by profession and by practice is a radical figure. The current one seems more so because as you correctly said, his task is cut out to be anti-Islamic fundamentalist crusader, and he really didn't have any choice. Communism is gone and the new agenda that the Vatican needed presented itself following 911 and the events thereafter. In fact, you wrote exactly the same words that came out of the mouths of many in college canteen discussions when he first raked up the controversy by quoting the Byzantine Christian emperor Manuel II Palaiologos when he said (for the benefit of the readers here);

"Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

It would take a 'great' Pope to bring himself out out the quagmire that he is into (I am not really sure if he is not really enjoying it), to assert himself in changing a few things in the Catholic world for good like taking a different stance from his predecessors on issues like divorce, abortion, contraceptive (for prevention of diseases as well as birth control) etc.

It took the Papacy time till the 20th Century to acknowledge that the protestants and the medieval scientists were right when they said that the Earth was round and indeed it revolved around the Sun along with a 'few other things'.

John Paul II had it in him to do it. He was a 'great'. Will Benedict XVI be able to come even remotely closer?

The custodian of the two of the holiest Islamic sites - Mecca and Medina is the King of Saudi Arabia. If he can visit the Vatican, the Pope too can visit Saudi Arabia. But will he ever do it. Maybe John Paul II could have given the current growing rift between Islam and Christianity. However, to expect Benedict XVI do it will be a bit far fetched.

the pope has already arrived in america. before his vist he said that his aim was to spiritually reach out to all catholics there. i really don't think he just went for that. a pope's visit to any country is not as simply as that. it has not been in the past and it won't be in the future. maybe it is to pep up americans to keep the fight against terrorism (really islam) going. apart from the catholics the pope is a much revered man in the entire christian world. years ago a protestant freind told me that it's not about catholics or protestants, we are happy that christianity has a much needed world religious figure and it is the pope and we need him.

It has become a fashion these days to rebuke religious figures esp those related with Christianity. The pope is a great man. He was courageous enough to say that he was deeply ashamed of the RC clergy sex abuse scandal in the US and elsewhere. If only we learned how to listen to him with peace in our hearts we would be able to understand the true meaning of his sayings. We always jump the gun and conclude wrongly.

Why blame the pope for social miseries that he preached to the Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Many other Cath celebs did and do that. E.g. Mother Teresa who is already considered as a saint (yet to be canonized I guess) was one of them. Let's not discuss everything evil about her. I would like to point out something that the world at large is not aware of.

After the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War when India beat the shit out of Pakistan, horrific tales of the Pakistani genocide against the Bengalis especially the Hindu Bengalis started emerging. Almost half a million Bengali women were systematically gangraped and abducted to be used as sex slaves by the Pak soldiers. They were raped till they died and mutilated sadistically. The army barracks had chopped breasts, fingers and pigtails of women as trophies. There was one eye-witness account where an 8-year old girls vagina was slit open because she could not accommodate a soldier's penis and was raped till she died.

These heart-wrenching stories prompted Mother Teresa to come forward. During that time tens of thousands of the rape victims were pregnant. Surprise of surprise, Mother Teresa made passionate public appeals for the women not to abort their babies. She had no word for the soldiers, no word of sympathy for the victims or condolences for the dead. Her sole interest in the matter was preventing abortions.

The Catholic Church is an inhuman, soulless, radical body that has no place in the world today. How on earth can one forget the Spanish Inquisition, beheading and persecution of scientists and thinkers etc? It is worse than Taliban's version of Islam.

[The image is of a young Bengali girl (in frock and blouse) who was raped to death by Pakistani soldiers during the genocide that dragged India to go into war with it in 1971 (more...). Mother Teresa was preaching Catholic values to the victims then!]

It’s pity…the world still wants to cling to religious figures. Priests and monks can’t solve world problems. What can you expect from a person afraid to the core and can’t step out of his popemobile? What can he deliver to the world? When the pope says mass at the Yankee Stadium, the Popemobile is not allowed to touch the grass either. And don’t worry, he’ll never dare to visit the mosque in Rome or Mecca. We don’t have reasons enough to pay heed to your deadly 7 sins anymore.

“We will absolutely exclude pedophiles from the sacred ministry.” – We don’t want the Catholic leader to feel ashamed. We all are. We want the pope to ask for forgiveness. Can you holy father? It’s never too late.
