Debate Number One: Advantage Obama
If there was any candidate that had a lot to lose in this first debate it was the Democratic Party candidate, Senator Barrack Obama. He was the one that many voters were still watching to ensure that he could pass the commander-in-chief threshold -many voters, including those in support of him.

Tonight he did.

Now even his opponents can relax. The man would not embarrass the United State should he become president. He would not bring about the end of the Republic.

Obama’s opponents can now relax just like opponents of Senator McCain had since relaxed.

If the first debate proved anything it is that the United States would not disappear when one of these two candidates succeed George W. Bush in January 2009.

It must be mentioned that the two candidates have fundamental differences in their world view. What those differences are is also subject to partisan interpretations.

In terms of composure, Senator Obama appeared relaxed and comfortable in his skin. Senator McCain on his part appeared to be irritated to be there debating Obama.

Both campaigns have begun to unleash their spins of the debate outcome.

In days to come, it would be interesting to observe if there would be a shift in the polls.

My guess is that there will not be any significant change in the polls. For most voters on both sides, nothing particularly happened that would change their opinion of their candidates. For the independents, most will wait for the next two debates to make up their minds.

But considering where Senator Obama came from, there is no doubt that he came up on top in this one.

Of course, you could say that I am bias because I am a support of Senator Obama. To that, I plead guilty.

We have to watch and see.

The spins are frightening.

There is hardly any doubt that Senator Obama is going to be next President of the United States. It is much too late for McCain to catch up with him. Sarah Palin's entry seemed like a masterstroke, but with reports of adultery coming in, I don't think the American public will want to have two horrendous adulterers as president and veep.

Do not discount the October surprise. It is still in the bag.

HA HA HA!!!!!! Guess what crossed my mind? The October surprise that you are talking about might not be in the bag but in the sack. Going by the dubious characters of both McCain and Palin, do you think they will share a single room, single sleeping bag together someday and call it a cost cutting measure to save America from slipping further into economic crisis?

Would be interesting to know your answer.

Don’t make Cindy go back to her pain killers.

McCain likes models and Beauty Queens and suggestions like yours can make Cindy relapse.

Oh, yeah. It is possible. We haven’t heard the last from the marvrick.

He saw Sarah’s beauty contest picture and his mind was made.

The favorable swing the Republicans enjoyed following their convention seems to be waning down now and it is back to square one with Obama leading popular polls. It is September now, almost into October. I don't think McCain will be able to beat Obama in November.

Rudolf,

I think for my country a Republican president would suit better. But if you asked me, I can never approve of George W. Bush for what he has done and I don't trust this McCain guy. Though my heart is with Obama, somehow my mind says McCain is good for my country.

McCain looked tired and frustrated old man and seemed to be angry at times. He found it hard to stay composed.

On the other hand Obama looked much more energetic, charming and someone who knew what he was talking about.

Obama definitely won.

It was a helluva boring debate because they seemed to agree on most things. Similar views on the bailout plan and the propaganda was almost the same on welfare etc. It hardly made any sense to me. It can hardly be called a debate.

The differences were not sharp. But they are there for the faithful to see.

I agree that round one has gone to Senator Obama. No doubt. Not much because of what he said but because of how he presented himself to the public.
McCain seemed to have struggled to control his temper and looked here and there. Obama was much livelier of the two

"well senator Obama seems to not undertand..., well senator Obama seems to not undertand..., well senator Obama seems to not undertand..."

This was all John McCain had to say for his part on the debate. I guess he might have repeated it one hundred and twenty six times. He screwed himself.

McCain seems not to understand...

In telling a story, the first rule is ”show” don’t ”tell”.

McCain did not show. He just told.

McCain said something that reminded me of Dick DeVos when he was running for governor of Michigan. Like DeVos he said that cutting the business tax rate would save American jobs from outsourcing. I found that incredibly naive.

I don't think anyone won the debate. Huffington Post today declared that the debate was won a lopsided contest that ended overwhelmingly in favor of Obama.
This is crap and though Obama presented himself better, there was hardly substance in the debate itself. It was a draw at the best.

Huffpo is the most shameless supporter of Obama. It always jumps the gun and the blacks seem too happy to drink the shit it dishes out in America. I know a few black bloggers who religiously link huffpo articles as the gospel truth. Glad my mother isn't going to vote for Obama this year, neither is my half sister out there who call themselves proud Americans.

... he could do better though.

I agree but I really believe that Obama needs to do more. I mean he needs to do more to show Americans, esp the critical undecided voters to just how much his policies and views tap into our current concerns.

Can anyone tell me why did McCain didn't look straight at Obama. Was he scared or was merely trying hard not to get lose his head?
I think it was a bit of both. I think McCain was way too unprepared for the debate. He may yet bounce back.

Let the veep debate begin..... it will be more interesting than the presidential debate that we saw yesterday...

I wonder if Biden can be worked up enough to lose his hold old head. Sarah Palin will be ogled at no doubt by both the horny men from either camp..

I was totally disappointed by the debate because the current fears of the Americans were not discussed by any of them to the length that it would have soothed some frayed nerves.

America is going through a mighty big crisis now and it needs a strong leader who can voice their concerns as the nation's top priority.

Nobody will survive the next day if they say they would cut social security. So they quickly ran away from that topic.

If a liberal does indeed win the presidency the country can kiss it's future goodbye. There will be widespread anarchy and there would be a rapid meltdown of American values, power and prestige around the world.

John McCain is a military stooge with no brains on how to run domestic administration. His foreign policies are a carbon copy of that of George W Bush's, perhaps even more dangerous. Yes I mean it 100%

At least Bush looked into Putins eyes and saw his soul.

McCain looked at Alaska and saw target Russia. That is a difference.

Imagine Bush giving nuclear technology to India who haven't signed the CTBT or NPT and bullying the NSG to sign the deal.

Republicans are not in favor of long term American interests. McCain will carry his agenda forward and make the world much more unstable.

George Bush once called Spain a republic. McCain doesn't seem to have a clue where Spain is - whether it's in Europe or elsewhere. I simply can't believe that there are people who would go out and vote for McCain still. They are just zombies.

It was clearly visible who was more intellectual of the two. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that the one with more brains will do a fine job. Bill Clinton was a total failure. Bush at least removed two tyrannical regimes from the world.

You have wasted a lot of energy writing this article on the debate. It had nothing in it. Nothing at all to write home about. The opening was not sharp. Wonder how the middle and end game would be. We are watching how McCain fares from here in Ukraine.

Good article RUDOLF,we all knew this was coming and we all knew that the democratic supporters were not on the stake because they already made up there minds, all of us also knew that it was the republicans who hadn’t made up there minds and after the debate we expected some of them to cross over and add the democrat margin and that’s just what happened,Obama has increased the gap ever since.

You are guilty of being Pro-Obama but the good thing about it is that there is no Republican alive who can take you to jail for that, all of them are busy strategizing on how to come second in the November Elections
