I understand that Republicans are desperately searching for a way to break Obama. Sen. Jim DeMint while speaking on Obama’s healthcare plan said “If we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.”
Well, I can be helpful here, if they ask nicely. I know a painless way of breaking Obama.
Obama, like so many of us, has his vulnerable side. You have to hit him at a particular spot or else you risk tick him off. And you don’t want to tick a president off- any president.
Essentially, our quibbling is about what? Is it really about deficit, gun control, taxes, abortion, healthcare and immigration? Or is it about something else? We have to resolve this if we want to find the right spot to hit Obama.
Deficits go up and down. And like Clinton proved, it could be wiped out when the time is right. Our children are not complaining. They, rather than us, will come up with more efficient ways to manage the country. But the country has to survive and be there for them to have something to manage.
Gun control will always be an issue as new guns are made and more deaths from gunshots are recorded. There is no way of living in a violent society like ours without pausing, every now and then, to contemplate some forms of control. Otherwise, one day, a handheld nuclear weapon will join the ranks of arms that we have the right to bear.
.
Taxes are inevitable. How much they are will always depend on the time. The safeguard against excessive taxes is that people have a limit to what they can tolerate. The politicians know this. And so do the people.
Abortion cannot be wiped out. It can be reduced but it cannot be made illegal. Banning abortion is like banning cigarettes. It will continue underground.
On healthcare – does anyone think America can keep going on with the number of uninsured Americans in our midst? America cannot afford that. Not even those currently insured can afford that. The healthcare system in America must be changed. It has run its course. Never mind that Bill Kristol wants to kill Obama’s healthcare plan now… and do nothing.
Immigration reform is just like healthcare reform. Immigration is not sustainable the way it is. It has to be changed. But no change is sensible if it does not provide a form of residency for those already in America, illegally.
So what is the fuss really about? Why are Republicans determined to break Obama?
Well, the only possible answer is that he is a Democrat who is poised to shake things up. If the Republicans were really interested in shaping these issues in their own image, they had the last eight years to fix it. George W. Bush’s first six year had the Republicans in control of the Congress, the Supreme Court and the Presidency. If they did not transform America the way they wanted, why do they want to break Obama now if not because he is attempting things Republicans do not care about?
Having said that, because I am a nice guy, here is how to break Obama – let him have his way. It is Republicans’ only hope. If he gets what he wants it will get into his head. And then he will meet his waterloo.
David Brooks of the New York Times thinks the Democrats are about to commit suicide the same way the Republicans did under Bush. He made it look as if a true democracy is not about one majority always swapping position with another majority (something that made a mockery of Karl Rove’s idea of a permanent majority.) I’d say I prefer a suicide that will give health insurance to all Americans, no matter how imperfect, than a suicide that will give us an Iraq war.
Despite the noise Republicans are making, the United States is going down the Obama path. And you know why? Because he won the last election and not John McCain and the Republican party.
Now go and live with it, y’all.
