McCain or Obama: Who Stole the Real Debate on Issues?

It is interesting that in this year’s race for president there is less emphasis on the issues. Between Obama and McCain are a lot of differences in how they will tackle issues. One will pull out of Iraq and one will stay forever. One will let the free market determine the fate of the people and the other will make sure that the government has a say. One will work hard to overturn Roe Vs. Wade the other will preserve the rights of women to choose and so on and so forth.

In spite of all the differences, what we are inundated with are rumors and innuendos. When not battling to dispel them, we have to perambulate on the issue of experience. It is difficult to argue that we do not need a person with experience as president, even when history shows us a different picture.

One observer once noted that “Roosevelt proved a man could be President for life. Truman proved anybody could be President; and Eisenhower proved we don’t need a President.” In a modern version of it, we can say that Reagan proved a man could be President for life. Clinton proved anybody could be President; and G.W. Bush proved we don’t need a President.

Talking about Reagan, writer Gore Vidal noted that “As the age of television progresses, the Reagans will be the rule, not the exception. To be perfect for television is all a President has to be these days.”

It all makes you wonder who stole the real debate on issues and why. Does it have something to do with McCain not being a real Republican or Obama being Black?
Recently I got this email that evidently illustrates the matter.
Enjoy.

You have two choices for president:

The first one has one of the longest lines of political experience in history. He is exceedingly popular in congress. He was a soldier who volunteered to defend the United States in the Navy.

The second one has no real political experience outside of Illinois. He is tall and lanky with big ears. He even lost a few of his first attempts at gaining political office. He is an excellent speechwriter and orator. He is a good attorney and has a successful law practice.

So which one would you choose?

This is a trick question because both were already Presidents of the United States. The first one is the 15th President of the United States, James Buchannan. He is the President who mired us in the Civil War by declaring the action illegal but doing nothing when the south decided to seceed from the Union. He is largely considered by historians as being the worst President in American history.

He was followed by the other man who became the 16th President of the United States: Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln is credited with the end of slavery, the end of the Civil War, and unification of the nation. He became president at a dark time when our country was deeply divided over very polarizing issues. He had no experience in Washington prior to his Presidency. He is widely considered by historians as one of the best Presidents in American History.

Which one would you prefer as your President now? We have an almost identical choice before us today between Senator Obama and Senator McCain. Could you sleep well at night if you made the wrong choice?

Sorry to interrupt your crazy diatribe with actual facts, but McCain and Obama haven’t debated once yet.

As I understand it, though, without even hearing such a debate you’ve already decided that YOUR candidate won.

Your understanding of democracy is quite unusual, I must say. Stalin had a similar view of the concept.

Was it not Reagan that said he would not exploit his opponent’s youthfulness and inexperience?

I will not exploit your difficulty with English comprehension. The first sign of that challenge is when you see someone calling others “demented”, “ignorant”, “crazy”, etc etc for expressing their opinion.

The debate I was referring to is what we are doing here, what many are doing on several internet sites and on newspapers, on radio and on TV. I did not mean in any way or form that McCain and Obama had a debate and Obama won.

Come on, give me little credit here. I may be dumb but not that dumb. In case you do not know, my madness has method.

So let me get this straight: You believe it’s possible that you could watch a debate between Obama and McCain and conclude that McCain is the better candidate, and vote for him?

Your friend needs to study a bit about history. The civil war was fought under Abraham Lincoln and more American lives were lost under Lincoln’s watch than in all other American wars PUT TOGETHER. Lincoln abolished the writ of habeas corpus and slavery even though the constitution flatly prohibited him from doing so. He forced one half the country to stay even though it wanted to go, at gunpoint, one of the most un-American actions of any president in U.S. history.

First Obama was JFK, now he’s Lincoln. JFK started the Vietnam war and ordered the Bay of Pigs invasion. Can’t you guys make up your mind which disaster you want Obama to emulate?

You know what? Kim, I give up. You win! (Whatever is it you said.)

I don’t know where I said I can watch the debate between McCain and Obama and vote for Obama.

And I do not know who my friend is.

I am happy though that you have moderated the language of your argument. After all, this is not a war. This is just a debate. The people who actually get to make decisions about the country get along better than some of us here.

Obama and McCain are going to debate many times in the coming months, that is where you can watch it.

Is it possible that you could watch that debate, conclude McCain is the better man, and vote for him?

It’s a simple question. Why can’t you simply answer ”yes I would vote for McCain in that case” or ”no I would vote for Obama regardless of how well I thought he did in the debates.”

Why do you have so much difficulty answering simple questions? Why do you suddenly have difficulty understanding when you are challenged on your wacky views?

I agree with Kim. She has got a point. No one who is supporting Obama today will support McCain even if he beats Obama from pillar to posts in the forthcoming debates running up to the general elections. The reason is obvious. One need not elaborate.

Kim.

How do you rate who wins and loses a debate? Is it what the talking heads say after that determines that? It is not like it is American idol.

The fact is that many voters, no matter what happens in a debate, even if it is a catastrophe will still vote for their candidate. Debates are mostly geared at convincing the independent voters.

I do not expect that anything can happen in a debate that will make me vote for McCain. Unless he says he is now pro-choice, pro-people and not pro-business and if he says he will not put on the Supreme Court people like Clarence Thomas. Of course, I know he will not do anything like that. So why worry.

If you ask McCain, I think he will tell you that voters like me are lost causes. The same way I do not expect you, Kim, to vote for Obama.
