Forget about Senator John McCain. Listen to Senator Patrick Leahy.
Or President Barack Obama.
The United States is determined to change course in the Middle East. What it means is that the United States will not continue to do the same thing it has done for years without success and expect a different answer.
The election in Iran appears to be flawed. We must say appears because we were not there monitoring thing. In our precarious ‘new beginning’ we must not be shown to be interfering in the affairs of Iran.
Let me get this right.
We condemn Iran’s leadership and then what? We urge the protesters on and give Iranian leaders reason to blame foreigners. Are we ready to move in when they begin to wipe the protesters out in greater numbers? Or will we sit it out like President George H. Bush Sr. did when he urged the Kurds to go after Saddam but watched from afar as Saddam descended on them.
If we still intend to negotiate with Iran, will we be more effective in it after we have called the Iranian leader illegitimate? If we agree that the real power in Iran is in the hands of the Ayatollahs, why should we pretend as if getting one leader out will solve our problem with Iran?
Obama had a smarter idea on how to deal with Iran. But the crowd that wants things to remain the same will never understand it. They have to be told a proverb and have the same proverb explained to them.
Sad!
