Obama Is Right On Iran

Forget about Senator John McCain. Listen to Senator Patrick Leahy.

Or President Barack Obama.

The United States is determined to change course in the Middle East. What it means is that the United States will not continue to do the same thing it has done for years without success and expect a different answer.

The election in Iran appears to be flawed. We must say appears because we were not there monitoring thing. In our precarious ‘new beginning’ we must not be shown to be interfering in the affairs of Iran.

Let me get this right.

We condemn Iran’s leadership and then what? We urge the protesters on and give Iranian leaders reason to blame foreigners. Are we ready to move in when they begin to wipe the protesters out in greater numbers? Or will we sit it out like President George H. Bush Sr. did when he urged the Kurds to go after Saddam but watched from afar as Saddam descended on them.

If we still intend to negotiate with Iran, will we be more effective in it after we have called the Iranian leader illegitimate? If we agree that the real power in Iran is in the hands of the Ayatollahs, why should we pretend as if getting one leader out will solve our problem with Iran?

Obama had a smarter idea on how to deal with Iran. But the crowd that wants things to remain the same will never understand it. They have to be told a proverb and have the same proverb explained to them.

Sad!

He's right, any overt US involvement would be a mistake that the hardliners in Iran would pounce on.

this is one of only two issues that I actually agree with Obama on.... what's going on in Iran should be settled within the Iranian borders without American interference

I just watched Iranian governmental TV and it called his views and speech "Meddling". Whatever he does, it is interpreted as meddling. And him not being straight may cause anxiety for Mousavi's fans as "approval of Mr. Ahmadinejhad"

I don't understand all of the dynamics of the situation, but it does seem to me that ignoring millions of people protesting against a cruel theocratic regime rigging an election for three days is horrible and demeaning thing to do. I just pray that some good will come out of this and that people's true voices will be heard and counted.

Look, the whole world blames America for all their problems. Just like Afghanistan blames America for Taliban but if America had done nothing, they would be blaming America for letting the Russians take over. They blame America for NOT doing something in Bosnia, for NOT doing something in Dufar....and on and on and on... America is the world’s whipping boy.. So the only decision that needs to be made is would you rather be blamed for what you didn’t do or what you did do?

It's a hard fact US has intervened according to its own convenience. US interventions were never aimed to put the things right rather these were according to US interests.
