I watched my first NBA game of the season last night. I was on hand to cheer the crowning of King James, as in LeBron James. But the god’s had a different plan.
I watched in horror as what many thought was inevitable crumbled in my own eyes. Dwight Howard and his Orlando Magic crushed the dream of the NBA and many of its fans by knocking out LeBron James and the Cavaliers in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. With 40 points, Dwight Howard made game 7 unnecessary.
The long crafted narrative of Lakers Vs Cavaliers, Kobe Vs LeBron had to wait until next year.
Sport writers will now scramble to establish a new narrative that has Kobe facing Dwight. With LeBron and his shadow off the court, Dwight Howard will now become visible.
To upset such a conventional story, the Magic had to beat the defending champions, The Boston Celtics and last night send King James and his Cavaliers into early summer fishing.
Already some sport writers have dubbed the coming confrontation between Magic and Lakers as Disney World Vs Disneyland. It does not take time for sport writers to switch loyalty.
What a humbling experience to watch as sport imitates life.
In the word of William Shakespeare, the elements were so mixed in LeBron James that “Nature might stand up and say to all the world, This was a man.”
The only problem is that Nature is taking its time. Nature seems to be saying, it will make the declaration when it wants.
As King James walked away at the end of the game without talking to the press, I could feel his disappointment. I took that moment to console myself too. For a long time, I had believed that the elements were so mixed in me that one day Nature would stand up and say, This was a man.
Nature had not said so for such a long time that I had almost abandoned the belief.
Now I know I should not. And nobody should abandon their dreams because most often Nature has a different timetable than the one we make or the one the sport writers make.
And whenever Nature stands up to make its declaration, you can count on the historians to be there with their superlatives. The loyalty of historians is with the winners only.

NBA games are beamed live over here during mid-mornings. I canceled all mid-morning activity (including cooking lunch) just to sit and watch - and be devastated.
Moral of the story: a king can’t be king without his minions. LeBron was the only one practically doing everything there! Orlando was a team. The Cavs was one player, practically.
I say, LeBron is in the wrong team!
I was getting ready for the Championship to begin only to be told it was over.
James will find a home in a big market with the right light and supporting cast.
Cleveland has neither light nor supporting cast.
