What President Obama should say tonight

Fellow Americans,

When you elected me president, you put in my hand your security and wellbeing. As your president, I swore to uphold that. At this time in our health debate, I will exert control, total control.

I do not care if you reelect me in 2012. I will do what I know is right. If you do not like it, please vote me out in 2012. If it is the wrong thing, please reverse it when I am out of office.

But for now, for today, I am sending to congress a bill that will give all Americans health insurance. What it means is that I will provide a public option that will be available and affordable for anyone to buy into. I will require employers to provide health insurance for their workers or be fined.

Nobody in America should be allowed not to have health insurance. When you have no health insurance, you are a burden to those who have. This nation cannot afford to have millions of her citizens uninsured anymore. It is wrong, it is cruel and it is inhuman.

For those who disagree with me, I ask you to have patience. You will have the time to reshape America to your own image when I am gone.

I know there is nothing I can say here to impress many of you. I did not come here to do that. I come to remind you that I am the president of the United States today and I intend to give all Americans health insurance.

America must come into the 21st century in the area of healthcare. I intend to do that. And it starts now.

Thank you for listening and God bless the United States of America.

Obama adopted some Republican ideas including John McCain’s idea but McCain immediately said it was a partisian speech.

This country is in trouble with politicians trying to put politics over the welfare of their citizens.

What doesn't make sense to me is all the people who don't want government backed health care because then "they wouldn't be able to make important health decisions with their doctors" the government would probably be far less evil than the insurance companies.

Yeah lately I get the feeling that the insurance companies are the good guys. Why are they getting so much support, when healthcare is so horrible.

America has one of the most expensive health care in the world, and not a very good one for that matter(unless you can afford it). Of course, last but not least more than 42 Million people are without any coverage. Not only the current system is not fair, but it doesn't work.

even if a patient can afford health care it is still very poor quality care...this will only change if the profit motive is taken out of the system and money is used for better surveillance

I volunteered 2-10 hours a week for a year for Obama. Giving up the fight this easily is not what I worked for. Hopefully he can get through this and pass the bill. No public health care=no reform.
