What if the Presidential Election is between Colin Powell & Barack Obama?

What if the Republican candidate for president is Colin Powell and the Democratic candidate is Barack Obama?

What will the story be? Experience versus lack thereof? Military service versus lack thereof? Establishment versus change? 20th century generation versus 21st century generation?

Though hypothetical, and some will even say it may never happen, what if it did? Who will you vote for? And why?

For most elections, most Democrats and Republicans have an easy choice. The Democrats will vote for whoever the Democratic candidate is and the Republicans will vote for whoever the Republican candidate is. Voters at play in most elections are the independents and few Democrat and Republican voters who are ready to jump ship for whatever pertinent reason of the day.

In recent elections, some pertinent reasons have created constituencies like the soccer mums, the angry white males, the NASCAR vote, and the Christian Rights. This new constituencies made of independents, Republicans and Democrats became the influential blocks of the particular election.

One electoral constituency that is in focus this coming election is the racists. Yes, they do exist. While some openly say they are, some fervently deny that they are. How many are they? Nobody knows and nobody will ever know. What we do know is that this is the first election they will be one of the major players. Yes, their primary issue, race, is on the table.

Like the other constituencies before them, this constituency will have a chance to exert their influence on who becomes the next President of the United States. The two campaigns are bracing up for that. They will be wooed and disavowed, subtly and overtly.

If they are presented a choice between Powell and Obama, who will they choose? Will they rather move to Canada than choose either of the two? For them is that kind of a choice the only way a Black man can be the president of the United States?

These are important questions, though silly when seen through the prism of today’s reality. Of course, the loophole is that being that it is not the reality, many racists can easily choose Powell. Even when it is known that his fear of being killed by racists was one of the reasons that made Powell to chicken out from a race for president.

In 25 years, whether the borders are closed and sealed off or not, there will be more Hispanics Americans than White Americans in these United States. What it means is that very soon, one of the presidential candidates will always be non-white.

Are we ready for that as a permanent fixture in American politics?

Maybe if we think more about it, maybe we can begin to see that Obama is preparing America for its future. Maybe Obama is that future we are fighting for.

If you are presented a choice between Powell and Obama, who will you choose? Will you move to Canada? Will you need to be forced to choose between Powell and Obama to contemplate voting for a Black man for president?

We wait for November.

And as we wait, I am watching America. I am watching what it does with Obama.

A great question but the answer is no so difficult. Colin Powell was a Republican and born to Jamaican immigrant parents. Though he also had a dash of Native American and Irish ancestry he was not 50-50 as Barrack Obama is. That is not the merit though. The merit lies in his vast experience being the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff with immense understanding of global geo-politics and whatever goes on in the political circles of DC by the virtue of his rank and position.

Obama on the other hand is a political rookie and I still don't think he has more in him than Hillary in all fronts. He was a non-entity until Iowa happened. There would have been no contest at all. In fact, I guess Colin Powell would have beaten Bush within the Republican party had there been a contest.

This is a meritless question. Had Colin Powell been in the fray, Obama would never have jumped into the race. One of the main reason why Obama got the nomination is because he managed to cut a sizable number of black Republican votes who changed camps just to see a black presidential candidate. No one can deny that.

And ain't we jumping the gun a little? Only time will tell whether Obama will make a great president or and till then I'll reserve judgment. Optimism about Obama is a good thing but ain't quite enough, sorry to say that.

Yes, the fact that McCain will lose the elections is a foregone conclusion. He doesn't have the glamor Obama commands. Americans have already shown they would rather vote in a man with a lot of glamor than a man with experience as witnessed when Bush was first elected over Al Gore.

The morning after doesn't feel that bad after all with all the fears of Hillary supporters will take revenge by voting McCain in. I too felt that way yesterday and the day before. It seems the bitterness has miraculously evaporated with just a pungent stench remaining in the air that will also be swept away in a few days. I think much of the credit should go to both the candidates on how they conducted themselves after the results. I don't think the Democrat vote bank would disintegrate. Also, don't forget, November is a long, long way off. The only mistake that they can make now is if Obama overlooks Hillary Clinton's wishes, if any, to be his vice president.

Powell would have won. Plain and simple. Obama is a progressive like Franklin D. Roosevelt or Woodrow Wilson. What do you see that can be truly called as 'new' about Obama's ideas? I see nothing, absolutely none in fact.

Wow, the earth is shaking with fear as to the judgment Rudolf Ogoo Okonkwo will pronounce if he is not satisfied with the results of the coming presidential election.

What will he do!?!?

Will he leave the country? But how could we SURVIVE without him?

Will he take rifle and go up on a water tower?

I KNEW it wouldn’t be long before you started telling us that the only way Obama can lose is if racism controls the vote. Any criticism of Obama is racism, pure and simple, we must vote for him or we are racists.

It makes no difference to you that Obama has ZERO executive experience and ZERO service to his country and is without doubt the least qualified person ever to seek the presidency (JFK had served his country in war, remember).

All you care about is his black skin! You never mention a single word about his specific accomplishments or any specific plan to enact policy. You just want a black man to be president, and the ”or else” threat of the Black Power fanatics is clearly present in your words.

In other words, you speak just like the racists you would condemn.

By the way, your analogy is mentally disturbed and utterly inapposite. It’s hard to believe you thought about it for more than a few seconds before making it. You seem to be suggesting that nobody attacked JFK for his lack of experience, but that JUST IS NOT SO. If you had a single clue, you’d know that JFK WON BY ONE OF THE NARROWIST MARGINS IN PRESIDENTIAL HISTORY. He was CONSTANTLY attacked for his lack of experience, and most people think he only won because of his pretty face on TV.

Your dishonest (and/or stupidity) are truly breathtaking!

RUDOLF:

Question.

Are you an American citizen?

Just want to make sure your not a foreigner telling Americans what do do in their elections. I’m sure you’re not, since that would make you guilty of exactly what you criticize George Bush of doing, meddling in other countries where he does not belong.

Please confirm.
