Why the Republicans Lost

As you can imagine, I thoroughly enjoyed the victory of Barack Obama. I stuck it up to those who believed Obama’s victory meant the end of America as we know it. Surprisingly, they have not moved to another country. I have moved on. No more gloating. No more high fives. The real work is just beginning. I am looking forward to the Obama years with great expectations.

But I noticed that a lot of Republicans are still stuck in the past. They are grumbling. They are throwing tantrums. They are blaming Sarah Palin. They are blaming the economy. Many more are in denial as to why they lost.

Just for the record, this is a reminder to those who pretend that they do not know.

The Republicans lost, and will continue to lose, because their party has no interest in appealing to a wide range of Americans. As the population of America continues to diversify, away from a white dominated society it was for centuries, the Republican Party must come out of its cocoon or risk extinction. This is the party’s a long term challenge. Every four years that comes, there will be less and less white population within the electorate. Unless the Republican Party begins to make serious effort to expand its reach, it will face more defeats in years to come.

It does not help that some loudmouths in the Republican Party are the biggest demonizers of immigration. What it means is that the largest growing population in America, the Latinos, will keep steering clear of the Republican Party. And as long as they are not part of it, the future of the Republicans will be in question.

On the short-term, the low taxes, small government and no regulation mantra of the Republican Party has been shown to be a fraud used by the well-to-do who run the party to deceive the poor workers who support them. The Bush years proved that whatever dividend that comes with such policies does not tickle down. With the economic meltdown, it was difficult to deceive the people much longer.

The cultural issues like gay marriages, abortion ban, and gun control are no longer working as a ploy to deviate the attention of the working class from their economic interest. In many parts of the United States, Americans have come to accept that gay marriages would not bring an end to life as we know it, a ban on abortion does not solve the fundamental problems families face, and gun control is not as synonymous as gun ban.

The grand deceits of the Republicans have come to an end. The Party will have to reinvent itself. And it won’t do so with Sarah Palin as the head.
