It has been a tradition long-held in the Catholic church for their leaders to keep their minds, brains and intellectual curiosity safely enshrouded in some form of prophylactic device (i.e. condom-like thing) lest science, progress, humanity and wisdom seep through to their attitudes and proclamations.
